When the University of North Carolina hosted Appalachian State University on September 21 for a football game in Chapel Hill, it was the perfect opportunity for two of the most passionate local government alumni bases to get together for a friendly tailgate – and some fun banter.
The School of Government hosted a tailgate for the two fanbases on the grounds of the School where alumni and fans of both the Tar Heels and the Mountaineers could congregate and enjoy some fellowship and football.
In the end, it wasn’t just the football teams with something on the line. When the Mountaineers preserved a 34-31 win by blocking a Carolina field goal on the last play of the game, more than just wins and losses was at stake. School of Government Dean Mike Smith and N.C. City & County Management Association (NCCCMA) Past President Grant Goings made a wager before the game. With App State’s win, Smith now must wear black and gold during the next NCCCMA Winter Seminar. (Had Carolina won, Goings would have to don Carolina Blue.) So, in other words, winter is coming, Dean Smith.
